In a bid to make design relevant and available to all Londoners, Tom Dixon has teamed up with the EPS (expanded polystyrene) Packaging Group to give away 500 designer chairs in Trafalgar Square – giving anyone a chance to own his latest creation.

The polystyrene chairs will be on display in Trafalgar Square at the same time as 100% Design and 100% East; 21-24 September 2006. Details of when to come to Trafalgar Square for the great ‘Chair Grab’ will be announced nearer the time.

With this latest design, Tom Dixon once again takes a fresh look at a familiar material. This time he has chosen expanded polystyrene (EPS), widely known as the polystyrene packaging that protects valuable purchases and fresh food in transit.

Tom Dixon: “EPS is incredibly lightweight and totally versatile – unique amongst plastics; a designer gets the unusual opportunity of working in large solid volumes. Making a polystyrene chair has given me the opportunity to fulfill an ambition to make design available to all; this time literally, by giving away hundreds of these chairs to Londoners – absolutely, no chains attached, 100 per cent free!”

Tom Dixon collaborated with the EPS Packaging Group, the trade association for the UK’s moulded EPS industry, who have provided financial, technical and manufacturing support to make this innovative chair a reality.

Designers from all sectors will take up the challenge to look at EPS with new eyes.

“Our industry could not be happier that a designer of Tom Dixon’s calibre and vision has taken up the challenge of looking anew at the potential of moulded EPS and, that he has created such a stylish and comfortable chair,” says Tony Pruchniewicz, Chairman of the EPS Packaging Group.

“The EPS Packaging Group was already working in partnership with 100% East to launch a design competition in September 2006. Then, the event director of 100% East, Jimmy Macdonald introduced us to Tom Dixon. Suddenly we had this exciting opportunity to work with Tom on his Trafalgar Square project,” concludes Tony.

100% East is the younger, more thrusting partner of 100% Design. As such it is perfectly placed host the EPS Design Competition and help set up the fruitful partnership between Tom Dixon and the EPS Packaging Group.

“One of the core aims of 100% East is to bring designers and manufacturers together, so its been a great pleasure for me personally to be able to facilitate this creative relationship,” comments Jimmy Macdonald, Event Director.

“The moulded polystyrene chairs will exhibited at 100% East on the EPS Packaging Group stand; along with entry details to the EPS Design competition. I hope designers from all sectors will take up the challenge; to look at EPS with new eyes and send in some great new designs to the competition,” says Jimmy.
